Mat Cole is selected for the GB Junior Archery Squad :

FoBB is pleased to hear the Mat Cole has been selected for the GB junior archery squad in the recurve division. He has been a member of FoBB for a few months now and many of you will have noticed the time he has spent out on the practice field in the summer. Matthew also represents Havant and Hayling Bowmen. We all wish him well with the training.

Mat's Selection Experiences

The selection process was fairly straight forward: I had to fill in the form on the GNAS junior page, and then the junior committee filtered out the applicants that they wanted to attend the assessment day. Then after the assessment day we waited a couple of weeks and hoped for the best! The form itself was a painâ 17 pages long, including 3 coaching reports (from personal coach, county coaching officer and regional coaching officer).

Then those of us who got through to the next stage were invited up to go to Lilleshall for an assessment day. Overall I think that there were about 6 separate assessment days or so, but I'm not sure about that. At my assessment day, there were about 10 of us, all recurve boys. At the assessment day we did allsorts of things. We started off by sitting down, and Peter Suk asking us questions (our aims, how we'd achieve them, etc.). After that we shot 3doz at 30m. We scored, but he said that the score wouldn't change his mind about who got in; he was more interested in how we shot. He was taking a lot of photos during the round, which was quite scary for me being as most of the time I was last on the line! After we shot, we did 2 concentration tests (easiest described as a jumbled up number grid from 1-100 where you're given 1 minute to find 10 specified numbers in the order that they're written down.) I think I did quite well at this, as I got all 10 the 1st test we did, and 9 in the 2nd. Lastly we did some physical tests e.g. how many sit-ups, press-ups and chin-ups, etc you could do in a set time.

A couple of weeks later I was emailed by Peter Suk telling me that I was part of the squad!

Senior Euronations :

I'm very pleased to have been selected to shoot for England in the Euronations competition to be held in Wales this July. For those who don't know, this is a competition between the home nations and some others, open to archers that haven't represented Great Britain in the last two years. I’ll be accompanied by at least two other Hampshire archers, Lee Miller and Mark Franklin.

National Indoors :

We are pleased to report that not only has a "Home Grown" member of the Forest of Bere Bowmen been very successful, yet again, in the National Indoor Championships but this year the Team and as such, the Club won the Top Honours and was awarded National Champions.

The team consisted of:

  • Josie Chandler
  • Peter Jones
  • Marc Gray
  • Sue Gibbs

Furthermore we are very pleased to find that four FOBB Members have been selected for special training and coaching with the National Squad. Although the success at the Nationals was in the discipline of shooting "Recurve" bows, the squad contingent is a mixture of both "Recurve" and "Compound" (the bow with wheels on) styles. Not only is the FOBB one of the largest Clubs in the UK we are now one of the most successful and have great potential for the future. Our success is due, in no small part to the current facilities the Club enjoys, with an Outdoor range second to none in the South of England and regular Indoor facilities that allow our archers consistent practice and a competitive environment - B.W.
